We turned right, on to Long Lovers Lane
By Gazegill, Foxhill and Westby Hall
Where the mist lay thick on the Ribble plain
On Balderstone, Sawley, Whalley and all.

We’d left the sun at the Higher Gills’ gate:
The signs said ‘No Stopping’ and ‘Take extra care’
All through the fog down the M58
To the Albert Dock and to Falkner Square.

Then the light shone as bright on Liverpool 8
As on Ravens Holme, Middop, and Rimington
For loves run as deep along Back Canning Street
As from Torrid Bank Wood up to Skeleron.
